Longterm review of the Ghost X actioncamera

A Great (but heavy) Little camera

but not really suitable for cyclists !

The Ghost actioncameras are on the market for years already (and available in many models). This review concerns the model Ghost X which is an old version. I bought it because I needed a new one and this model is cheap.

First thing I have to say is that it functions well. But, although, however ...

- Weighing 120 grams (about as much as a gopro) it is way to heavy for use at a bicycle. That is, if you also ride offroad then it has no image-stabilization. Mobius and no-name types weigh about 50 grams. Regular accessoires are not able to hold it firmly enough in position.

If you tighten the bolts of ie a handlebar-clamp with ie a 10cm extensionbar up to there absolute maximum any (every) bump will cause the combination to tilt. I therefor have put a piece of the fantastic repairtape Quechua from Decathlon 🖱️ inside the bracket to function as antislip. To be continued.

It functions perfect when taking pictures but any offroad-film will be totally bad. And you can consider very many tarmacroads in the south of europe also to be of the off-road type.

This video show the general result of filming ... On gravelroads it is much worse.

But for taking pictures the camera is perfect.

It has 1-touch recording for filming. You can not choose this startup-mode.

It has 2-touch recording that you can adjust to your preferred startup-mode.

The app is oké but you have no view once it is running in timelapse-mode.

After ample use the battery died out and I didn't manage to charge it anymore. But thanks to an online tip I finally did. Trick is to remove the official battery and then charge it, which means you charge the internal battery (which it obviously has). Once this internal battery is fully charged then charge again, but with the official battery installed.

It has no battery-indicator while charging, only when operated.

The recordinglamp at the front can not be turned off. Which attracts attention one does not want. I blacked it with a marker but that lasts only shortly. Real paint could do that job.

The lens can be rotated for some 320 degrees, so the lens to the body. This way you can adjust it to be leveled if the camera is not mounted horizontally, ie to the side of a helmet.

Ghost created very special clamps to mount it's cameras. One flat and one curved clamp are delivered that are ment to be fixed to motorcyclehelmets with doublesided tape. There is one other type available that can be mounted to any regular accessoirie in the usual way. That special clamp is very expensive. I have glued one tape-bracket to fit to a standardbracket but (so) this is not a standard solution. You only need some confidence to believe it will not drop of. But some day it will ...

The camera-half of that clamp has wings that have to be pushed hard to get the camera out of it's bracket. Those wings are quite hard to reach when installed and that makes uninstalling rather difficult.

For some reason the (protective) lens gets damaged quite easily, although not sticking out of the body. This protector can be bought as a replacement accessory but is rather expensive.

The housing is coated which is nice and non-slippery. How long will it last ?

This model X has an old-style USB1 connection. That makes downloading results out of it being very slow. Which is no problem at all if you use a cordreader.

The numberingsystem for pictures and videos restarts from 1 everytime you clean up the memory. That will make you loose recordings later or sooner.

Verdict of the Ghost-X actioncamera

It is perfect for taking pictures.

It has it's problems regarding the mounting.

It is to bad for filming.
